Absolutely. I think that people miss out when they say that Murakami writes “magical realism” fiction. It’s not just that he uses seemingly otherworldly elements in his stories (e.g. raining cats in Kafka on the Shore), but he also shows that ordinary parts of our everyday life have enough magic in themselves. Food, sex, and work all take on this spiritual quality because to Murakami, domestic life itself deserves attention.

Also, if you’re interested in starting Murakami you might start with Sputnik Sweetheart (my personal suggestion) or Norwegian Wood (seems like the most popular recommendation).
